Fermilab's Accelerator Division seeks a highly motivated Senior Technician to work in the Target Systems Dept. - Technical Group. You will be part of a diverse team of talented and dedicated accelerator physicists, engineers, designers, and technicians. This department performs the design, fabrication, operation and upgrade of high-power target systems for ongoing and future accelerator experiments NuMI, BNB, and Muon g-2 at Fermilab, most notably the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF). The challenging and sophisticated target systems consist of highly precision devices operated in a harsh environment, which requires specialized techniques and equipment for fabrication, maintenances and operations This individual will take a leadership role inthe technical group. The job will require that the person must be able to meet all medical requirements to access and respond to all operational emergencies to insure continued operation of the experiments. Persons seeking this position must be willing to respond to operational emergencies on a 24hr/7day basis. You Will
  • Support ongoing maintenance and operations of Fermilab target stations.
  • Help build and test the component assemblies used in the Target Stations.
  • Under the supervision of engineers, lead the fabrication of component assemblies, as well as keeping track of small part inventories and inspection.
  • Keep the electronic record of production progress and become the primary source of information for the system.
  • Oversee the technical work of colleagues and outside contractors, ensuring quality work is produced to budget and schedule.
  • During beam operations, monitor the operation of electromechanical systems they are responsible for and to notify the Accelerator Main Control Room operators of any abnormalities.
  • Generate and assist in generating Hazard Analyses and procedures.
  • Abide by and responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, safety and health regulations.

We are looking for
  • Associate degree in relevant field. BS or higher degree in a STEM discipline is desirable.
  • 7+ years of work experience including 2+ years of leadership experience, either through direct supervision of project leadership.
  • Experience working with common hand tools and precision measuring equipment.
  • Experience assembling components within a +/- .005" tolerance using mechanical drawings, sketches and verbal instructions.
  • Experience working on mechanical systems.
  • Experience working with machine shop tools including lathes, mills, etc. desired.
  • Perform basic set-up, operation, testing, fabrication, modification, repair and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the use of CAD systems is desirable.
  • Ability to communicate clearly using verbal and written practices with team members.
  • Ability in basic word processing and web applications is required. Advanced ability in word procession, spreadsheets, presentations, and other computing systems is desirable.
  • Experience with electromechanical systems, electrical systems, and control systems is desirable, including design.
  • Experience with overhead cranes, rigging, forklifts, and other types of lifts is desired.
  • Dedication to maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
  • Ability to work independently following general or detailed verbal or written instructions is required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience in the preparation of materials to achieve aerospace quality aluminum welds is desirable.
  • Working understanding of vacuum principles is desirable.
