Position Purpose

To support financial planning and budget analysis for a portfolio of departments, programs, and initiatives across the Geisel School of Medicine. Responsible for the development and maintenance of short and long-term financial models and forecasting tools, preparing analyses, and supporting the annual budget process. Supports efforts to improve financial processes, evaluate existing systems, and implement process improvement initiatives. Serves as financial liaison between Geisel operating units and school leadership by drawing on a comprehensive understanding of business activities and goals. Provides consultation to departments (and other operating units) on strategic/financial questions requiring thoughtful problem-structuring and analytic capability. Prepares ad-hoc financial and accounting analyses at the institutional and department level, as requested, and assists in resolution of budget issues throughout the course of the year.

Key Accountabilities
  • Investigates and analyzes budget variances throughout the fiscal year for a portfolio of departments. Interacts closely with key financial and operational leaders in the various divisions and departments to understand plans and forecasts as well as to highlight the drivers of key variances to budget. Recommends corrective action when results do not meet budget expectations. - 10%
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to enhance the use of analytics in the decision-making process. Introduces and applies increasingly sophisticated analytic and financial modeling techniques in the completion of this work, which may include financial forecasts, trend analyses, historical data compilation, and ratio comparisons. Maintains primary responsibility for the development and maintenance of various models/tools at the institutional and departmental level. Engages with departments to incorporate feedback and to ensure clarity and completeness as pertaining to financial models. - 10%
  • Collaborates with School leadership and other finance team members in the development of inputs and key drivers for multi-year forecasting efforts. - 10%
  • Collaborates with department representatives to develop annual full funds operating budget for each department assigned. Provides hands-on assistance throughout the budgeting process to department financial planners. Understands the needs of each individual planner and maintains a high level of customer service while working with each person to ensure individual budgets are created efficiently and effectively. - 10%
  • Analyzes and assesses budget submissions for compliance with budget guidelines. Works directly with department administrative and financial staff to bring their financial plans in line with Geisel resource allocations and requirements. - 10%
  • Communicates key aspects of the budget by creating a variety of budget reports and information tailored to the needs of different audiences (Board of Trustees and Advisors, Geisel senior management, Geisel and Dartmouth College financial management, Geisel department fiscal officers, Dartmouth-Hitchcock (D-H) financial leaders) as necessary. - 10%
  • Responsible for the monthly review of each assigned department as well as the quarterly projection update to Fiscal Leadership regarding any potential issues and financial planning options. Develops analytical tools and techniques to analyze the unique financial drivers of assigned department portfolio. Provides reports and analysis at the request of and for Director Finance, Executive Dean, the Dean and the Geisel Board of Advisors. - 20%
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively across all levels of Geisel including the senior leadership of the School, the College and D-H on various projects. Partners with departmental representatives, both administrative and senior leadership, to prepare deliverables as requested by Fiscal Leadership. Participates with Geisel and other senior leaders in assessing financial and operational implications of proposals. Effectively communicates and personally supports Geisel and College values to foster inclusiveness and diversity. - 20%
